SE WI IIBA Community Forum
Our Chapter now has a presence on the IIBA’s community groups website. Email your Business Analysis questions, tips, issues, problems, or solutions to our Chapter’s group ( This e-mail address is being protected from spambots. You need JavaScript enabled to view it ) and see responses from your fellow Chapter members (you’ll need to be a member to participate—another benefit of IIBA membership!). In addition to our chapter’s group, you may also view and participate in other groups such as “Becoming a Business Analyst,” “Quick Tips for Better Business Analysis,” and “The CBAP v2.0 Exam” (see http://community.theiiba.org/grouplist.htm for a complete list).

Call for Presentations
If you have Professional Development topics you’re interested in seeing presented to the Chapter—especially those grounded in the areas addressed in the Business Analysis Book of Knowledge (BABOK)--please contact Bryan Buford ( This e-mail address is being protected from spambots. You need JavaScript enabled to view it ), or feel free to post your suggestions to our Chapter’s new community group. We’re especially interested in seeing Chapter members offer presentations at our Chapter meetings—it’s a great opportunity for public speaking in front of a friendly audience, and a chance to become familiar with a specific portion of the BABOK. Don’t be shy, give your Chapter the benefit of your experience and perspective.

Study Group Interest?
We’ll be circulating a survey at the March 23rd Chapter meeting to determine membership interest in convening a BABOK Study Group in 2010. Keep in mind—participating in a BABOK study group isn’t just for those Chapters members who are interested in taking the CBAP exam (though it would certainly help toward that objective), but it will help any member—whatever their experience level as a Business Analyst—seeking to develop their professionalism and knowledge of the field. If you’re a member who’s unable to attend the March 23rd Chapter meeting but have interest in a BABOK study group, please contact Bryan Buford ( This e-mail address is being protected from spambots. Frequently asked Questions - IIBA Certification Exam

How many questions are on the exam?
The CBAP exam has 150 questions

What kind of questions are they?
All the questions are multiple choice with four possible answers to select from. Some questions are based on "comprehension" (e.g. definition, recall, etc.) and others are based on "situational analysis" (e.g. given a scenario, which is the best course of action) where the applicant must do a bit of analysis to arrive at the answer. It is neither all of one type or the other but covers a range of Blooms taxonomy.

What is the exam based on?
The exam is based on the tasks identified in the BABOKTM . While some information is contained in the BABOKTM , it is not the sole source of questions on the exam, the BABOK TM references other sources the candidate may find helpful.

How can I prepare for the exam?
To prepare for the exam please refer to the BABOK and the references in the back of the BABOK. The exam is also based on experience. You may also want to look at the EEP listing (http://www.theiiba.org) for any additional training you may require.

How long will I have to take the exam?
Candidates will be given three and a half hours to complete the exam.

Is the exam computer-based or paper-based?
The exam will be paper-based through 2007. Future plans will include a computer-based exam.

What is the minimum score necessary to pass the exam?
"Cut scores" are developed using psychometric procedures lead by Castle Worldwide. After each examination the "cut score" is calculated based on the cumulative performance of test items and adjusted as needed. The IIBA Certification Body will not publicly reveal the "cut score" or the pass rate for any exam, although these will be monitored to ensure the effectiveness of the exam.

How do I sign up for the exam?
The exam is the final requirement for CBAP certification and anyone desiring to take the exam must first apply for certification and pass the initial screening process. Once determined to be "qualified" to sit for the exam, the individual will have the ability to sign up for the exam date of their choice on the IIBA website.

How will I know if I passed the exam?
Candidates taking the exam will be notified of their score by Castle Worldwide. This should take no longer than 30 days. The scoring information each candidate receives will show their performance in each of the knowledge areas. Unsuccessful candidates will be able to see what areas they might want to concentrate on for the re-examination.

How many times can I take the exam?
More detailed procedures are being developed for the certification process. At this time there is no limit on how many times a candidate can take the exam.

Will there be an International exam?
Yes, there will be exams offered internationally.
